What You'll Learn From This DVD
Skill in push hands separates the advanced from the novice in Tai Chi. In this DVD, you'll join a workshop conducted by Ken Gullette, teaching students the five patterns of Chen Tai Chi Push Hands. As usual, Ken focuses a lot of instruction on the internal body mechanics required for high-quality Tai Chi. You'll see the mistakes that beginning students make, and watch as students are corrected, as if you are inside the workshop.
Many Tai Chi teachers say that push hands is not intended for combat. They are completely wrong. Push hands is often the first step from learning the forms to using it for self-defense. The different patterns of push hands help you learn to become sensitive to an opponent's force; you recognize it, adapt, neutralize it and counter. Your goal is to maintain your physical and mental "center" while you help your opponent go off-balance. Push hands can show you the weaknesses in your form, and it teaches you how to sense force coming in from an opponent and how to relax, change, neutralize and counter your opponent's attack. Like the Tai Chi forms, effective push hands requires maintaining the ground path and peng jin, whole-body movement, and silk-reeling energy. All this is explained on this DVD.
Two of the beginning push hands students on this DVD went on to win gold medals in push hands competition at a big Chicago tournament.
